memory techniques WEB Let's try an example. While using the alphabet or countable numbers as peg lists are great places to start when first applying the magnificent power of the Peg Method, there is another amazingly convenient peg list immediately ready at your disposal: your body. Choose as many body parts as you like, as long as they connect in some kind of order that is obvious and memorable (maybe start at your head and make your way down to your toes, or vice versa), and you've got a portable peg list! Let's jump right into an example that uses ten body parts to memorize ten things. How about the ten largest countries in the world by population? Our ten body parts, starting at the head, will be: Top of your head Ears Eyes Nose Mouth Chin Armpit Belly-button Knees Feet The ten countries we want to learn (in order) are: China India USA Indonesia Brazil Pakistan Nigeria Bangladesh Russia Japan The first thing we need to do is create a memorable image for each countries. To do this, I'll just think of the first thing that comes to mind. If nothing comes to mind, then I'll maybe try to think of something the country name sounds like: China - Chopsticks India - Curry USA - Hamburger Indonesia - In Dough (IN-DOUGH-nesia; imagine pressing in some dough with the palm of your hand, like a baker) Brazil - Bra (BRA-zil) Pakistan - Pack of Cards (PACK-istan) Nigeria - Cheerios (Ni-CHEER-ia, close enough...) Bangladesh - BANG! Russia - Vodka Martini Japan - Pan (Ja-PAN) Next, we take these images, and in sequence, imagine them interacting with each of our body parts from our peg list. Since the items on our peg list are real things that are actually on your body, go ahead and imagine the images for each country interacting with your own body parts, as silly as that may sound! Top of your head - Chopsticks are resting on the top of your head, drenched in soy sauce and wrapped in some remnants of noodles. Ears - Dripping out of your ears as a spicy curry sauce. Eyes - A hamburger patty is in place of your eye socket. Maybe a single tear of mayonnaise rolls down your cheek. Nose - Imagine pressing in some dough into your nose, with some of the dough seeping into your nostrils, plumes of flour jetting out of the side of your nostrils as well. Mouth - Like a magician pulling an endless mutli-colored flag out of his mouth, except it's a sexy, lacy bra. Ooo la la! Chin - Resting on your chin is a full pack of cards. Maybe a Blackjack dealer is about to deal the cards straight from your chin! Armpit - Cheerios are flowing out of your armpits into a bowl for your consumption. It's got that extra BO tang. Yum! Belly-button - From out of the deep crevasse of your belly-button shoots out a bullet like it's a gun--BANG BANG! Knees - Your knees are two martini glasses filled with some seriously potent Russian vodka. Feet - Down on your feet is a burning hot pan cooking your dinner. Your feet, as a result, are covered in nasty blisters. Now close your eyes, try to visualize that pathway through your body from head to toe, recalling the images and countries as you go. Voila! There you have it. Resting on your body now lies the largest populated countries in order! Well done!

brain on porn WEB Believe it or not, studies show that those who consume pornography more frequently have brains that are less connected, less active, and even smaller in some areas. [1] To be fair, the studies only show that there’s a correlation between porn consumption and smaller, less active brains, but they raise the question: Can porn literally change your brain? Scientists used to believe that once you finished childhood, your brain lost the ability to grow. [2] They thought that nothing except illness or injury could physically alter an adult brain. Now we know that the brain goes on changing throughout life, [3] constantly rewiring itself and laying down new nerve connections, and that this is particularly true in our youth. [4]

dry clothes without sunlight WEB Use a high spin Use a high spin setting on your washing machine so that as much water as possible is removed from your clothes before they’re even ready to dry. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the increased energy used to do this is nothing compared to the energy needed to run a tumble dryer. Two towel tricks Once your clothes are out of the washing machine, try one (or both!) of these towel tricks to remove even more moisture: Put a large fluffy towel down and lay the item of clothing on top. Then roll up the towel into a sausage (garment inside) and twist it tightly, starting at one end, working your way along, until the entire sausage is twisted. This squeezes excess water out of your clothes and into the towel. Put your garment on an ironing board, as if ready to iron, but lay a thin towel over the top of it. Press the towel using a high heat, stopping to turn the garment over so both sides are pressed. This channels some warmth into the fabric without causing any of the damage associated with putting a hot iron directly on it while wet. Give them room Al fresco line-drying is your best bet for drying items in a hurry, but it’s not always practical, so drying racks and clothes horses are the next best thing. But don’t just pile all your wet clothes onto a drying rack – they need air and ventilation to dry properly. Take the time to hang items individually, allowing space in between. If you use a drying rack or clothes horse that has individual bars, hang imminently-required items over two bars instead of one, so more air can circulate around them. Location, location, location Place your drying rack near a source of warmth: a radiator or a boiler, for example. Alternatively, put it wherever there’s movement in the air, perhaps near an open window or by a fan if it’s a warm day. Rotate! Check on the drying status of your item regularly and rotate the garment around so that it gets even contact with air. Pay attention to pockets, underarm areas and cuffs – these are notorious areas for dampness! If you put a garment over a radiator, be sure to remove it as soon as it’s dry, otherwise you’re wasting heat by simply channelling it into an already warm barrier. In dire straits, hair dry, don’t air dry If time is really of the essence, get your clothes as dry as possible and then give them a very quick blast with a hairdryer. Be sure to rotate the item frequently, ‘airing out’ pockets, sleeves and collars as you go. You needn’t use a particularly high setting, either. Warm is fine; it’s all about air flow rather than heat. Tumble into the dark side If you really, really must use a tumble dryer, make sure you set it to the most efficient setting – preferably the ‘eco-option’ if your machine has one, and make sure you’ve removed all the lint from the catcher so the machine can run as efficiently as possible. Some folk suggest putting in a dry, fluffy towel with your wet item, claiming it speeds up the process. But old wives’ tale or not, be sure to check the dryer regularly; don’t just set it to an arbitrary time setting and amble off, your clothing may be dry long before the end of the cycle, meaning you’ll have wasted a lot of time and energy.

It is sometimes referred to by the Chinese as "the father of Chinese music" or "the instrument of the sages". The guqin is not to be confused with the guzheng, another Chinese long zither also without frets, but with moveable bridges under each string.

Chapter 12. Chapter 2 Supergirl AU: Kara and Mike are roommates who have no idea the other are their superhero teammate…. Beep, Beep, Beep, Kara awoke long before her alarm went off, but she waited for the noise before moving from her bed, as she was a firm believer that schedules existed for a reason. She took the extra moments to stretch and relax and enjoy the calm before the storm. The "storm" was quiet now, but there was no knowing what would set him off today… 'Good morn— "she started to say into an empty kitchen. A dirty kitchen. The Storm had apparently worked a late shift at the bar and had been too tired to clean up after himself. The counter was littered with half-emptied boxes of Chinese take-out and melted ice-cream. Kara didn't know if she was more upset over the mess or the waste of food as some pot-stickers sounded mighty delicious, even at 7:00 am… Reluctantly, she began to fill the dishwasher with the aftermath of her roommate's night, all the while questioning whether she really needed the extra income. Ultimately, it was the picture of herself and her sister and their parents on the mantel that reminded her what she was working for. She could handle a couple horrible roommates if it meant keeping her family close together. Life eventually emerged from her roommate's room while she was cleaning, in the form of a scantily clad women who was clearly embarrassed upon being discovered by her lover's young, blonde roommate. Kara smiled at the shy brunette who smiled back and then grabbed her coat and quickly shut the front door behind her. Was that lucky number 47 or 48? Kara asked herself while finishing the dishes. She silently admired the girl for running out before she got too attached. Kara had seen too many coming back days later, begging for a second chance when it was clear they were only invited to a one-night event. Drama, drama, drama. Honestly, if she didn't need the money, she would have gotten rid of that boy long ago… The man of her musings chose that moment to come out of his room, wearing nothing but sex-hair and boxers. "Oh, damn, Kara! Sorry," he sputtered while grabbing the first shirt he saw and quickly putting it on, inside out. "I didn't think you'd be home this morning." "Well, it is 7 AM on a Tuesday, which is a typical work day for most humans," Kara spat, ironically, making sure to maintain eye-contact and not glance further south. Mike scratched his head and laughed awkwardly, muttering something about how "it's 5'o'clock somewhere, or it's always sunny someplace, blah, blah, blah" and ending with some bartender cliché that she honestly didn't hear because she was still too irritated at the mess in front of her, and too distracted by the half-naked man-child to do anything about it. It wasn't until the news on TV began broadcasting a report of a hostage situation developing at the National City Bank that either people in the room made a move considered action. "Oh! I just got a big scoop on a story, um, I need to head out…" Kara made a show of scrambling to grab her belongings before running out the door. "I, um, have…stuff too…." Mike managed to sputter while Kara was already half-way out the door. Supergirl was first to arrive and was silently assessing the situation when she felt a presence appear beside her. "Nice of you to join me," she said with a smirk, her eyes fixed on the commotion in front of them. "Well, I was in the area," her partner's deep, male voice responded. "Besides, I couldn't let you have all the fun." Turning her head to face him, blue eyes locked, and Supergirl realized she really was grateful to have him there. When this mystery alien showed up out of nowhere three months ago, lending his enhanced abilities to assist in the capture of Livewire, Supergirl was thankful, but cautious. Although not judgmental by nature and known to give all aliens a fair chance, she kept him at arm's length for some reason. Aside from her cousin, Supergirl had yet to meet an alien who matched her skill for skill as this newcomer had, and she was self-aware enough to admit that made her nervous. She is ashamed to say she wasn't an ideal host of Earth to this fellow alien, but he did not seem to take a hint. He continued showing up seconds after her to every crime, disaster, and danger that threatened National City, providing assistance and eventually winning her over. They fell into a natural routine with their complimentary fighting styles and playful banter, building a partnership that made them both stronger and better assets to their beloved city. It was not lost on her that even their suits complimented each other. The team came to be known as the "Superhero Duo"—Supergirl and Valor. "You want point on this one?" Supergirl offered her partner as a courtesy. They have done this dance so many times, verbal communication was unnecessary. "Nah, I had last time. I'd hate to steal all the glory. Besides, I think people are starting to get sick of seeing my heroic face plastered all over the news," Valor replied and with a wink, flew around to the back of the building. Supergirl allowed herself a moment to chuckle at his ego before refocusing on the situation at hand. She attempted to talk down the criminals, a futile endeavor, but it provided enough of a distraction for Valor to sweep in and rescue the hostages. The whole scenario was anticlimactic by superhero standards and resolved much quicker than either of them expected. "Sooo, coffee?" Valor suggested, hopefully. The blonde responded with a smirk and a shake of her head, used to this line of questioning from him following a rescue. "Ok, no coffee…. How about dinner?" He tried again. "Valor..." Supergirl sighed. They've talked about this before. It was better this way—being crime-fighting partners and nothing more. It was safer to leave their personal lives separate from their superhero lives, even if that means not truly knowing the person you fight alongside. "Ok, ok," he conceded, throwing his hands up in the air. "Can't fault me for trying. Until next time." And with a flourished bow, he was gone. Blushing, Supergirl was only slightly ashamed to admit she was looking forward to the next criminal strike.

The test's name is occasionally used among Star Trek fans or those familiar with the series to describe a no-win scenario, a test of one's character or a solution that involves redefining the problem and managing an insurmountable scenario gracefully.
krav maga WEB Krav Maga (/krɑːv məˈɡɑː/; Hebrew: קְרַב מַגָּע [ˈkʁav maˈɡa], lit. "contact combat") is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces[1][2] derived from a combination of techniques sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo and karate, along with realistic fight training.[3][4] Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.[5] It was derived from the street-fighting experience of Hungarian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld, who made use of his training as a boxer and wrestler while defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, during the mid-to-late 1930s.[6] In the late 1940s, following his migration to Israel, he began to provide lessons on combat training to what was to become the IDF.[7]

life in the 1930's WEB Lessons on life from the dirt poorA new exhibition shows how children and families struggling through the Great Depression made do with simple things, writes Steve Meacham. March 23, 2010 — 3.00am They call themselves ''the bread and dripping children'', and many spent their childhood in the ironically named ''happy valleys'' - shanty towns around Australia's cities during the Great Depression. For their parents, the early 1930s were harsh and soul destroying times, especially in Sydney, which bore the brunt of the Depression with at least one in every three breadwinners out of work. [Image: Patched clothes and games of drop-the-hanky ... children at Happy Valley in La Perouse.] Patched clothes and games of drop-the-hanky ... children at Happy Valley in La Perouse. Thousands of families were made homeless, gravitating to impromptu camps such as Happy Valley at La Perouse. There they made homes out of scrap tin, with walls fashioned out of hessian bags coated in limewash until they were stiff as a board. It's an era commemorated in Skint! Making do in the Great Depression, a new exhibition at the Museum of Sydney, sponsored by The Sydney Morning Herald, which has provided many of the photographs. Advertisement Yet the curator, Annie Campbell, says it is striking how fondly most Depression-era children remember their childhood despite their poverty. ''The saving grace of the Depression is that you didn't feel alone,'' says Campbell, who started work on the exhibition after the collapse of the Wall Street banks that led to the recent global financial crisis. ''You could find support, you could barter, you could rely on your neighbours because they were in the same boat. That sense of community spirit is what got people through it.'' Bob Tasker, 83, of Narwee, was four in 1930 when his father - an unemployed shearer - moved the family from Gilgandra hoping to find a job in the city. Soon the family of seven were living in a makeshift home in Happy Valley. ''We didn't pay rates and we didn't pay rent,'' Tasker laughs. ''If you wanted to build a place, you were welcome to stay. Everyone was in the same boat.'' Though his parents were obviously doing it tough, Tasker remembers Happy Valley with affection. ''There were lots of families there. You made up your own games like rounders and drop-the-hanky. And there were plenty of places to hide because the homes were all so close together.'' Sometimes dignitaries such as the NSW governor would call at the camp, throwing threepenny pieces to the children. The jockey Jimmy Pike was another frequent visitor. ''He was very generous. He'd always bring presents for the children.'' Like most of his generation, Tasker can't help but compare his childhood with the conspicuous consumption of modern children. ''If a present hasn't cost $1000 and isn't the latest electronic gadget, today's kids don't want it,'' he says. ''We were lucky if we got a tin whistle. And if we did, we really appreciated it.'' For Fred Moore, 87 and living in Dapto, his favourite memory of a Depression-era childhood in Parramatta were the billycarts. ''Billycarts were an important part of any boy's life,'' Moore says. They were more than just toys. ''We'd go off scavenging with them. If you found a bit of wood you'd bring it back in the billycart for the fire. And you would use them to run messages and errands for your mother.'' But Moore - one of six children whose father was a ''dusted miner'', suffering from silicosis - stresses it was not all fun. ''I remember them setting up the soup kitchens in the schools and having to wear patched clothes. We were just one step ahead of being thrown out of our house. You'd wake up in the mornings and find some family had done a flit in the night, loading their stuff on to a horse and cart and heading off to the creek banks. ''None of us had any shoes. If you see a school photo from those days, there wouldn't be a single child in the class with shoes on.'' Home-made toys figure prominently in Skint, showing the resourcefulness of the times. There's a bicycle made of scavenged wood and pram wheels. The obligatory billycart, made from packing cases. A toy train with a jam tin for an engine and cotton reels for its funnels. A doll's house made from matchsticks. Campbell's favourite toy is a beautiful ''swagman'' doll. ''If you were a parent, you didn't want your child to go without,'' she explains. ''And making things was a diversion from the stresses of the times … This doll was made by a mother for her four-year-old daughter as a Christmas present. She found the discarded doll's head in a rubbish bin. Then she made the doll's body and its clothes out of old scraps.'' Campbell says the Depression-era children have a lot to teach today's youngsters about making do and mending - or recycling, as we call it. ''A lot of the people we talked to expressed concern about how much we consume today,'' Campbell says. ''And they grew up with a great respect for their parents. They knew their parents were doing their best. And at the end of the day, they knew they were loved and cared for.'' Skint! Making do in the Great Depression is at the Museum of Sydney from Saturday to July 25.

peta vs seaworld WEB The chase scene in the documentary Blackfish felt like someone punched me in the stomach. A convoy of high-speed fishing boats races across the sea in pursuit of a baby orca while the adults in his pod try to intervene. In the end, an orca who will become known as Tilikum is netted and hauled aboard ship. The adult orcas cry. Even the human crew appears pained. Years later, one sailor tells Blackfish director Gabriela Cowperthwaite that trapping Tilikum was “the worst thing I have ever done.” For PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Blackfish was a gift. Since 1998, it has been campaigning to free Tilikum and others like him. National Campaign Manager Katie Arth says, “Animals are not ours to use for entertainment.” Her organization mixes strategic opportunism and digital technology to promote this view. The Blackfish broadcasts on CNN injected new life into the SeaWorld campaign. For 30+ years, Tilikum has lived in a chemically treated tank that in human terms is equivalent to a bathtub. He was previously the property of Sealand, but is now owned by SeaWorld. While Tilikum’s main role is to perform for human audiences, he has a track record for deadly behavior. In 1991, Tilikum and two other orcas killed 20-year-old Keltie Byrne, a student that was a part-time trainer at Sealand. In 1999, at SeaWorld, he was allegedly responsible for the death of 27-year-old Daniel P. Dukes, who had entered the orca tank after closing hours. In 2010, Tilikum drowned 40-year-old veteran trainer, Dawn Brancheau. Following this fatal incident, OSHA banned trainers from close contact with orcas, a decision that SeaWorld is appealing. PETA maintains that the orcas are driven mad by inhumane treatment. It advocates for a different theme park model—coastal sanctuaries—where people could see the orcas in their natural environment from a whale-watching ship. PETA’s initial communications activities generated empathy for Tilikum and other captive orcas, but the message didn’t resonate much beyond committed animal welfare activists. Once PETA began calling attention to Blackfish, support soared, with thousands of people visiting the campaign website, SeaWorldOfHurt.com. According to Arth, PETA’s Twitter account set a new record for retweets—4,190. The hashtags #blackfish and #blackfishonCNN trended, largely the result of PETA’s active marketing team that was live tweeting while watching the broadcast and public discussions. A month later, PETA’s tweet marking the 30th anniversary of Tilikum’s capture from the wild was retweeted more than 4,500 times. SeaWorld Campaign: 6 Actions Taken There are at least six major threads to the SeaWorld campaign: A dedicated website (with rich content) Impact litigation (the court case) Direct action (street demonstrations, petitions) Social media marketing (Twitter) Corporate pressure (shareholder activism, business partner boycotts) Mainstream media attention (driven by cultivating controversy) PETA has a tradition of creative opportunism. In 2012, for instance, they sued SeaWorld in federal court on behalf of captive orcas. Tilikum v. SeaWorld argued that five wild-caught orcas deserved protection under the Constitution’s 13th Amendment, which prohibits slavery. They lost the case, but gained media coverage, visibility, and more supporters. In 2013, when SeaWorld sponsored a float in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day, PETA volunteers stood along the route to protest. Over 100 were at the Rose Parade this year. At the last Macy’s parade, 12-year-old activist Rose McCoy received national media coverage when she jumped a barricade while holding a “Boycott SeaWorld” sign at both parades. In April 2013, when SeaWorld’s stock went public, PETA became a shareholder, giving it the necessary standing to offer a resolution at SeaWorld’s annual meeting, calling on the company to create a coastal retirement sanctuary for its orcas. This got attention from serious media, including a major feature on Fox Business, an outlet not usually associated with progressive nonprofits. Then, in February of this year, SeaWorld attempted to block PETA’s resolution by exploiting a loophole in securities law. It petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission—successfully, it turns out—for permission to ignore the resolution. This sparked additional media attention from top media outlets, including Reuters. According to a story in the Orlando Business Journal, SeaWorld has deployed tactics such as stuffing the newspaper’s online ballot box for an opinion poll about Blackfish. PETA contends that SeaWorld also featured misleading copy in a paid advertising blitz designed to discredit the campaign. Never one to pass up an opportunity, PETA posted a video rebuttal on its website, using social media to drive traffic to it. Another tactic PETA employs is to target companies that do business with SeaWorld. At the top of the list is Southwest Airlines, which paints its planes to resemble orcas. Activist Robin Merrit recently presented a Change.org petition at Southwest’s Dallas headquarters, to no avail. Southwest CEO Gary Kelly stated that the airline is not considering changing its relationship with SeaWorld, a response that deeply disappointed Merrit, who noted that many entertainers had cancelled gigs at SeaWorld in response to Blackfish and PETA. “I hope Southwest will stop cheerleading SeaWorld’s cruelty just like many artists including Willie Nelson, Martina McBride, and Heart have already done,” Merrit told Eric Nicholson, a blogger for the Dallas Observer. In turn, Nicholson ended his story with this: “That’s right, Southwest. Heart has more moral courage than you. Time to take a good look in the mirror.” By using a wide array of tactics and technologies, PETA reaches different target audiences through the media each prefers. Some people respond to video, others are energized through live protests, others read their local newspapers. PETA identifies multiple pressure points where it can make its influence felt, then bombards its target audiences from every possible angle—and they are very tenacious about this. In the case of SeaWorld, PETA has been campaigning for 16 years. Blackfish provided a huge boost, that’s true, but part of the reason it had such an impact is because PETA knew how to leverage it

simplify - - - - | 18 ways to simplify your life in 2019 WEB How to simplify your life in 2019: 1. Spend less time on social media. I’m making this one #1 for 2019 because I know we are all spending too much time on social media. Think about all of social media sites you use throughout the day, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Then, think about when and where you’re doing it, like waiting in line somewhere, procrastinating at work, eating lunch, spending time with friends, etc. All of those little amounts of time really add up, and I’ve read many statistics that say that the average person spends over five hours a day on social media! FIVE HOURS A DAY! I’m completely guilty of this too. I love using social media to connect with friends, family, and my readers, but there are times when I find myself scrolling through my feed and just zoning out. This is completely unproductive! Besides wasting your time, spending too much time on social media can lead to comparing yourself to others or trying to keep up with someone in a different situation, and those things can cause feelings that negatively impact you. One of the ways to simplify your life is to shut down those sites or create time blocks so that you cannot access your accounts during certain periods of the day, and so on 2. Declutter (and maybe even downsize) your life in 2019. Decluttering your life to live more simply can lead to many benefits, such as the ability to: Save money. If you have a huge house filled with tons of stuff, you are probably paying higher costs for homeownership overall, and all of that stuff costs a lot to maintain and repair. Have less clutter. The bigger your home, the more likely you’ll have empty rooms that you feel the need to put stuff in. Now that we live on a sailboat, we are much more mindful of what we buy. We think about every purchase in terms of weight, size, where we can store it, and more. If it doesn’t fit, we don’t buy it! Spend less time on maintenance and repairs. Not only do maintenance and repairs cost money, they cost time! Spend less time cleaning. If your house is full of stuff, it’s probably really hard to keep it clean, and a larger home is going to take a lot more time to clean than a smaller one. It’s really that simple. Related content: Downsizing Your Home? Here’s How I Went From A 2,000 Square Foot House To An RV 3. Watch less TV. I know I talk about this a lot here, but that’s because TV is such a big time waster! We cut out TV entirely when we were living in the RV, but now that we’re on the sailboat, we’ve been watching it a little bit more. Still, I’m probably only watching an hour or two a week. The thing is, though, I used to watch way too much TV, and I know that cutting back on TV is a great way to simplify your life as it helps you regain some of your time. In fact, the average person watches about 35 hours of TV a week, so just think about what you could do with just half of those hours back every week. Reclaiming some of those hours will allow you to spend more time with your friends and family, work on side hustles, get outside and enjoy the world around you, and more. Spending a few hours less each week in front of the TV is one of the easier ways to simplify your life in 2019. Related: 59 Things To Do Instead of Watching TV – Stop Watching TV! 4. Finally stop paying for cable. The average monthly cable bill is currently over $100. By the year 2020, the average cable bill is expected to be around $200 a month. If you are trying to watch less TV as one of the ways to simplify your life in 2019, then cutting the cable is a good step in the right direction. We’ve lived cable free for several years, and we’ve never regretted that. You can read more about cutting cable here and how to save money by doing this. I recommend getting a digital antenna so that you can receive local channels for free! If you aren’t ready to quit paying for TV all together, there are lots of options that allow you to only pay, usually much less than cable, for the shows you want. 5. Find free forms of entertainment. I once heard from someone who told me they were spending around $500 a month on entertainment. And, they were also complaining about their debt. What?! If you are trying to get rid of high-interest rate debt, I can’t think of any reason why you should be paying $500 a month to have fun. All of that money can add up to a lot of stress! Cutting down your entertainment budget doesn’t just save you money, it is one of the many ways to simplify your life because it helps you see all of the amazing and budget friendly things already around you, like getting outside more. There are many ways to have fun for cheap. Check out How To Have Frugal Fun for some of my ideas. 6. Pay off your debt to simplify your life. Paying off debt isn’t just important to me as a personal finance blogger, it’s important to me because I actually know how living debt free can allow you to really start living the life you want. Whether you have student loan debt, credit card debt, car debt, or whatever else, paying it off will make managing your finances easier as you will have less debt to stress about. When thinking about all the mental clutter we have, debt can be a huge contributor to that clutter. Debt can cause a crazy amount of stress, and eliminating your debt as a way to simplify your life has endless benefits. Paying off your debt will lead to reduced spending, and that means you can set more aside for your long-term financial goals, like through investing or saving for retirement. Most Americans have many different accounts that they are trying to manage on a daily or weekly basis, from checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, student loans, their mortgage, car loans, etc. One of the most helpful things you can do to simplify your life in 2019, especially your financial one, is by downloading an app like Personal Capital . Personal Capital allows you to aggregate your financial accounts so that you can easily see your financial situation. You can connect accounts, such as your mortgage, bank accounts, credit card accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, and more. Plus, it is FREE. 8. Don't waste time on being negative. We all have things that happen to us that turn our day from good to bad. Maybe your car wouldn’t start in the morning, a friend cancelled on you at the last minute, or you got a negative review at work. Having a negative reaction to these types of things is only natural, but it’s what you do in these situations that can really impact your life. If you find that you are spending the rest of your day thinking about how bad these things are, you are wasting your time. Yes, it is really that simple. Like I said, that immediate reaction is a natural part of coping. However, instead of dwelling on the negatives that may be occurring in your life, such as feeling regret and/or gossiping, you can be more productive by using this time for things that actually matter. Moving past difficult things is, just that, difficult, but finding ways to refocus your energy will help you get through your day and life in general. Just think about how much time you may have wasted recently by dwelling on the negative and thinking about the “what-ifs” in a situation? Being more positive and finding ways to move past bad situations is a hard but important way to simplify your life. 9. Organize your life in 2019. Being unorganized can cause you to waste a significant amount of time and can lead to late fees, stress, lost items, and more. Here are some surprising statistics I found from Simply Orderly about being unorganized: The average person spends 12 days per year looking for things they can’t find. Every day, the average office worker spends 1.5 hours looking for things. In a recent survey, 55% of consumers stated they would save anywhere from 16 to 60 minutes a day if they were more organized. 23% of people pay bills late and have to pay late fees because they are unable to find their bills. These statistics are all nuts! I can’t believe how much time the average person wastes every day. To become more organized, you may want to find a day or life planner that works for you, set reminders on your phone, use Post-Its to remind yourself of upcoming tasks, and so on. I highly recommend looking into different types of organizers as well. These can save space and save time! 10. Start saying no more often. One of the ways we add clutter to our life is by agreeing to more than we can actually handle. While I am a big fan of stepping outside of your box and saying yes to everything, there are situations when you should probably say no. If you say yes to everything, but are ready to pull your hair out, then saying no is good way to simplify your life in 2019. Think about everything you have said yes to in the past year, and ask yourself these questions: Did that bring me joy? Did the benefit of the task outweigh the stress it caused? Was I able to make a meaningful difference for myself or someone else? If you find that the answer to these questions is mostly no, then perhaps that’s the answer you should be giving in the future. Saying no may allow you to have more time to focus on what you truly want, and that’s what learning to simplify your life is really about. 11. Think before you multitask. One of the biggest misconceptions about time management is that you save time by multi-tasking, but that’s not always the case. In fact, it actually causes many people to waste time! Some people can multitask successfully, but because it takes so much time to refocus on a new task, many people cannot. This means that every time you switch between tasks, you may actually be spending more time than if you approached each task separately. Think about your strengths and weaknesses to understand whether or not multitasking actually helps you save time. It’s possible that you can multitask some things, but others will need your full one-on-one attention. For the most part, focusing on one task at a time will let you manage your time more effectively and let you focus on more important things as you learn to simplify your life. 12. Pay expenses annually or semiannually. There are some bills that you have to pay each and every month, but if you were to find ways to eliminate some of these bills, by paying them annually or semiannually, it can be one of many ways to simplify your life and your finances. You can pay bills like car and homeowners insurance every six months or once a year, and you will probably qualify for a discount if you do this as well. If you switch from monthly payments for those two bills, that’s two less to worry about each month! You will probably have to adjust your monthly and yearly budget to do so, but looking at and adjusting your budget is always a good thing to do anyway. 13. Think about what is truly important in your life. When you’re thinking of you how to simplify your life in 2019, this is a good place to start. That’s because the new year is a good time to reflect on the past year and think about the things that have brought you joy, the ones that have been fulfilling, and the things you want for your future. Make a list of your priorities, goals, and dreams, and think about what is holding you back from each of those things. Even though that list might feel long, you will be able to clearly see what types of clutter are holding you back. When you put the things that are most important to you out in the open, you can start working to simplify your life to achieve your dreams. 14. Have less clothing options. This might surprise you, but some of the most successful and wealthy people out there have a very limited set of clothing options. That’s because they realize that’s not a place to devote their time and energy. By having a smaller wardrobe, you'll have more time to focus on other things in life and this can help you to drastically simplify your life in 2019. If you want to simplify your life by cutting back on your wardrobe, start by looking at the items you wear the most and get rid of the one you haven’t worn in months. It can feel really good to clean out your closet! You can then start to build your wardrobe around the items you know you love and will wear more often. Related content: Why You Should Spend Like A Millionaire- The Frugal and Smart Money Habits of Millionaires 15. Automate your payments. This is one that you can do in just a couple of hours, and automating your payments gets rid of that financial clutter I’ve already mentioned a couple of times. You can have your paychecks direct deposited (many people still deposit their checks manually), you can select to auto pay your bills, you can even auto pay your monthly credit card payments. Sometimes, going paperless can give you discounts on some of the payments you make on a regular monthly basis. Automating your payments can even make managing your budget easier! Even though I check through all transactions and expenses, I still automate many of my actual payments so that I never have to worry that something was forgotten about. Most of my expenses are similar from month to month, so I can usually just check the payment to see if everything is correct. 16. Gain confidence in 2019. This can be one of the most difficult areas to work on, but I really do believe that gaining confidence can help you to live simply and enjoy life more. Gaining confidence isn’t an overnight thing, and it starts by finding small ways to believe in yourself. Once the ball gets rolling, your confidence will allow you to improve your life rather than dwelling on things that scare you. Confidence can lead to: Attaining the things you deserve in life. Getting the job you want. Making more money. Reaching your dreams. Public speaking. Meeting new people. Networking like a boss. Managing a business or employees. Traveling the world, and more. I used to be terrified of speaking in public– I still am a little bit. But I knew it was something I needed to do to grow my business even more. It took time to grow my confidence, but now that confidence is rubbing off on other areas of my life. Learn more at Be More Confident And Get What You Want In Life . 17. Start investing When you start setting aside money now, you are simplifying your future. It means you won’t have to work for the rest of your life, it means you might be able to retire early, and more! Investing is important because it means you are making your money work for you. If you weren’t investing, your money would just be sitting there and not earning a thing. Plus, the earlier you start investing, the more you’ll end up earning because investing is long-term financial planning. The problem is that many people don’t know how to invest or don’t think they have enough money to get started. To start to simplify your life for the future, learn more at How To Start Investing For Beginners With Little Money . I recommend getting started with Motif Investing because they allow individuals to invest affordably. This approachable investing platform makes it easy to buy a portfolio of up to 30 stocks, bonds, or ETFs for just $9.95 total commission. 18. Set reminders on your phone's calendar (or any calendar). Reminders are one of the easiest ways you can simplify your life in 2019. I know this first hand because if there is something coming up that I know I will not remember, I will create a reminder. This makes managing my life easier because I don’t have to worry about forgetting things, missing payments, etc. I create reminders for things such as: Business tasks and to-do lists. When it’s time to pay estimated quarterly tax payments. Renewing license plate tags for our cars. Paying semiannual bills, such as car insurance. I’m always surprised by the number of people who don’t set reminders for things, because you can use them for anything! Plus, they do more than simplify your life, they can help you save money. You can use your phone to remind you about all sorts of things, like when it’s time to pay bills, take medications, bring back library books, call a friend, etc. 19. Slow down One of the goals with learning how to simplify your life is so that you have more time to slow down and enjoy what’s already around you, but it’s also something that you should be doing right now. People rush through all sorts of things, from busy days at work to rushing through their entire life. Maybe you’ve spent college only thinking about graduation, after graduation only thinking about a job, working and only thinking about starting a family, until everything has passed by and you are wondering what you did with your life. It is exciting to think about the future, but if you stop and look around at your right now, you might be surprised by how good it is. Like many people I know, I'm guilty of running through life too quickly and not stopping to really enjoy it. However, by slowing down, we can learn to do things correctly, enjoy things more, and have the ability to start living simply. 20. Sit in peace to simplify your day. This is similar to the last point, but it’s slowing down even more to the point that you are just sitting down in complete silence. When was the last time you actually did that? No phones, no one else, just you.
snowflaking WEB If you’re like most people, you spend a long time thinking about your novel before you ever start writing. You may do some research. You daydream about how the story’s going to work. You brainstorm. You start hearing the voices of different characters. You think about what the book’s about — the Deep Theme. This is an essential part of every book which I call “composting”. It’s an informal process and every writer does it differently. I’m going to assume that you know how to compost your story ideas and that you have already got a novel well-composted in your mind and that you’re ready to sit down and start writing that novel. The Ten Steps of Design But before you start writing, you need to get organized. You need to put all those wonderful ideas down on paper in a form you can use. Why? Because your memory is fallible, and your creativity has probably left a lot of holes in your story — holes you need to fill in before you start writing your novel. You need a design document. And you need to produce it using a process that doesn’t kill your desire to actually write the story. Here is my ten-step process for writing a design document. I use this process for writing my novels, and I hope it will help you.
