We could go through many other health issues stemming from early puberty
but what I want to know is: why the sudden shift in puberty age in the first
place?
Well, here is a quote from a medical journal, attempting to explain this
phenomenon:
Estrogenic pollutants must be taken into consideration [for early-onset puberty] since
environmental and epidemiological studies have shown that humans and some animal species
are adversely affected by environmental chemical substances that interfere with the endocrine
[hormone] system and are known as endocrine disrupters. Environmental pollutants acting as
endocrine disrupters include estrogens and estrogenlike products that are universally
present in the form of hormones used in stockbreeding, chemicals employed in industry
and agriculture, and substances naturally contained in plants and cereals.15
So, today, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, we are all being swamped by
estrogenic “body pollution” from our surrounding environments. This leads to
run-on sentences like the one above being published in professional science
journals, expressing concern over “estrogenic pollutants”. The title of that paper,
by the way, is “Premature thelarche and environmental pollutants”. “Premature
thelarche” is the premature onset of female breast development.
It has also been discovered that estrogenics, like parabens for example, act
directly on the pituitary gland.19 The pituitary gland is considered a “master
regulator” of many hormones in children and adults.
Undoubtedly due therefore, at least in large part, to high levels of artificial
estrogens in our environment, early onset of puberty has recently become
extremely common.
In fact, early puberty has become so common that medical doctors are
considering changing the “normal” age-range of puberty for both boys and
girls.20 Changing the age range! Believe it or not, testosterone has already
undergone this re-adjustment (remember: we have sub optimal levels of
testosterone). Similarly, “normal” vitamin D recommendations ranges have
undergone re-adjustments (hint: we have sub optimal levels of vitamin D). So,
precedents have been set for changing “normal” recommendations based on our
culture’s “average people”; people who sit in offices / classrooms indoors most
days. Hurray for average!
And before we further incriminate sexual-assaulting estrogenics, you might be
wondering: why the heck would any right-minded lab or doctor promote
modifying the puberty age-range? Why on earth would someone want to adjust
the puberty age-range younger?
Well, moving the puberty age-range younger makes a host of increasingly
common issues (“early onset puberty [disorder]” or “premature thelarche” or
“premature adrenarche” etc.) immediately disappear. Voila, our society is
“healthy” again.
If the age range was changed, for example, it would no longer be considered
legally or medically “abnormal” or “pathologic” when girls entered puberty at
age 7—despite the obvious fact that this should be considered abnormal. Young
children are simply not prepared to start having children.
So, kids are clearly entering puberty earlier than ever. Are the estrogenics
really to blame, I mean really?
Absolutely. In fact, a single scientific review paper21 incriminates BPA,
phthalates, atrazine, and ZEA mycoestrogen in “precocious
puberty”—“precocious” being another way of saying “early-onset” for puberty.
And there are many studies about APEs (alkylphenols) affecting onset of puberty
(e.g.22) and soy (e.g.23), etc. In fact, every single IRS 10 List estrogenic is able to
alter puberty in some way when thoroughly investigated scientifically.
Now let’s move our discussion a few years down the line. Let’s look at college
enrollment and then shift focus entirely to males to finish this chapter.
In 1950, about 70% of undergraduate students were male.24 By 1970, this
number was around 60%. Next, by 1980, undergraduates were equally men and
women. By 2006, undergraduates were very nearly 40% male and 60% female.
Noticing the trend?
While I was doing my Ph.D. at Boston University, in fact, there were more
than 60% women present: 3,691 more women than men were enrolled at BU.25
That number of women, by the way, is more people than the entire study body of
Ave Maria University while I attended!
Meanwhile, the US Department of Education estimates that this gender gap
will continue increasing slightly every year.25 What is going on?
Well, first, I realize this is complicated.
But I also think to merely say “it’s complicated” is a cop-out. Women have
become more active and visible in society, certainly, but it goes beyond that as
we see a notable imbalance today opposite from merely a few years ago.
A contributing factor here, I believe, is that many boys and men around us—
not every single boy or man, but many—have become more apathetic and
indifferent in recent years. Many of us can attest to this from personal experience
and if you disagree, that’s fine. But even enrollment in boys’ sports including
basketball, football, baseball, and soccer are all on the decline in America.26
Frankly, apathy is not a historical “norm” for males. Regarding this specific
topic overall, I recommend that you check out Dr. Leonard Sax’s books titled
Boys Adrift and Girls on Edge. Dr. Sax presents detailed analyses of many
chemical and environmental “motivation” issues, including examinations into
the shrinking “nucleus accumbens” portion of the male brain. Further, a
contributing factor to overall male apathy, Dr. Sax argues, is the artificial
estrogens. Don’t forget the sea otter study we looked at in Chapter 4: where
12,900 nanograms of paraben were found in the average sea otter brain.
To put it frankly, we males today are being “feminized” via estrogenics,
especially in developed countries.27 Brains, bodies, everything. And, yes, I
grimaced and raised my own hand here. Estrogenic pollution is hard to avoid.
Furthermore, I personally never attempted estrogenic avoidance for many years
of my life.
This term “feminization of males”, you should know, is not at all my
homemade term. Scientists everywhere are using this phrase, sounding the
alarm. In fact, the term has become common in scientific studies so let’s dig
deeper.
The hormonal disruptions from estrogenics seem to have a unique antimotivating
factor in males compared to females. This goes beyond the sex-drive
issues we’ll discuss shortly. Again, I’m talking here about a physical
neurological [brain] change.
