New home on a paradise island

Singer Tarja Turunen reveals to IS that she has lived on the island of Antigua with her family for a couple of years.

ONE of our international stars Tarja Turunen will have soon toured the world for twenty years, but this world traveler has a home too. For over ten years it was in her husband’s home country in Argentina, but a few years ago they left the vividly pulsating Buenos Aires behind. They found a new home from the Caribbean in paradise like sceneries.
- We’ve lived on the island of Antigua for little over two years. We wanted to escape the noise of a city of millions. Antigua is a really quiet island, Tarja reveals the new situation in her life.
Antigua has also charmed Tarja’s husband Marcelo Cabuli and the family’s five-year-old daughter Naomi.
- Antigua has its own energy that calms you, but also inspires. Both are important things. The past years I’ve been going from one place to another, with no time to stop.
Tarja has needed the calm home life on the island to counterweight with the constant travelling performing demands.
- While there we only focus on the most important things in life which are family, home and the peace surrounding them. That’s all you need, the singer says.
- It’s wonderful to have a place where you can genuinely stop and give time for you own thoughts. Antigua offers a complete stop to my coming and going, because it doesn’t have one single shopping mall to spend time in.

TARJA has used the creativity inspired by Antigua by taking more part in the production of her music and also writing herself. Her Christmas album From Spirits & Ghosts: Score for Dark Christmas comes out next week.
- While recording the album I watched the turquoise blue sea. It might not be your first thought to record Christmas songs in the summer of Caribbean, but because of schedules, that’s what we had do.
The song called Together that she composed for the album she made specifically for those who are alone on Christmas.
- Christmas comes to everyone whether you want it to or not, but for everyone Christmas isn’t a celebration of joy. There’s a lot of loneliness and suffering on Christmas too. The album is dark for a Christmas album and the features familiar songs have been transformed into versions that differ from the conventional ones.
Christmas has gotten a new meaning in Tarja’s life too after the birth of her daughter.
- I lost my mother in 2003 and after that Christmas strayed from my life completely. Christmas didn’t feel like Christmas at all and I didn’t feel like celebrating it anymore. Only now I’ve began to live Christmas again through my daughter.

TARJA’S last performance on the Raskasta Joulua tour is a week before Christmas Eve but after that she has concerts in the Ukraine.
- The last show before Christmas is on the 21st. After that we’re going to have an exceptional Christmas because we will spend it in New York. I want Naomi to see all the Christmas lights.
Despite the international way of life Tarja wants to teach her daughter Finnish traditions too.
- Naomi loves to be in the kitchen when we bake gingerbread cookies and Yule tarts. She is a very cheery and likes to do things with her own hands. We also try to make it to Christmas sauna, but we can’t manage that every Christmas. Naomi still believes in Santa, mum reveals.

THE family’s life changes will continue next year.
- We will then return to Europe, because we have the intention of building a house in Spain.
They have tried living in Spain during the past year in a rental home located near Malaga. Their own home will be built near the same neighborhoods in the South of Spain.
- We don’t want to be in any big city here either. My travelling for work will be easier since I can fly smoothly from Malaga to every direction. We have now gotten used to the Spanish way of life and bureaucracy, Tarja, who was reached by phone from Spain, laughs.
In addition to the home set up in Spain they will keep the house in the Caribbean as another home.
- We’re not going to give that up, the house has become such an important place for us.

TARJA reached her forties in August. Her fortieth birthday was celebrated in a house in Spain the couple rented for family and friends coming from all over the world.
- I’ve never after the wedding had a big party for anything, but this time we partied properly. Our wedding was the last big party we have had since we have been together, the singer, who got married in 2003, tells.
The party in itself was the best possible birthday gift. Many of the guests saw Tarja for the first time in years.
- A lot of love, laughter and tears lasted for many days. Or actually for the whole week, since some of the loved ones stayed here for a whole week. The birthday of all time, I’m very grateful that we had the opportunity for that kind of wonderful being together.

THE accumulation of age has increased Tarja’s will to take care of herself more, even though because of her work as a singer her lifestyle has been reasonable before.
- I’ve consciously thought that now that I’ve entered my forties, but dammit, my butt won’t still get wider. I’ve worked out more than ever before. I’m surely now in better physical shape than I’ve ever been in.
Tarja moves a lot with her manager husband.
- Marcelo will soon reach fifty but the man is in better shape than ever before.
It’s easy to live an outdoor life in Antigua.
- We run and move in nature all the time. During the day it’s extremely hot, I agonize about the heat and not even crazy people would run then, but early in the morning or as night falls, it’s good to move outside.
The beauty tries to deal with ageing with restraint.
- I of course have wrinkles on my face, but my lovely fans have said for years that they want to look like me when they are forty.
A little before her birthday Tarja had surgery on her nose.
- The nose looks exactly as before, they didn’t anything to it externally, but the renovation inside was even bigger.
Along the years many doctors have recommended to get her nose’s inner cartilage straightened.
- I constantly had sinus infections. The inner cartilage had tilted crooked enough that it began to make breathing harder too.
The operation done in Spain went well.
- Now I can breathe much better.

FIVE-year-old Naomi Cabuli Turunen has inherited her mother’s musicality.
- She’s me to the second power. She dances, sings and plays. She wanted to start playing the piano at age four, I didn’t start until I was six, Tarja laughs.
- Naomi is also very artistic, she draws and paints. I can’t do that at all, but she gets it from my dad, who draws really well and his side of the family has many visual art teachers.
Now after starting school Naomi doesn’t always travel with her, but spends more time at home with dad as Tarja sprints to performance trips.
- Namu is a girl, who is grateful for very little. She doesn’t demand things and doesn’t take them for granted, mother evaluates.

Tarja Turunen returns to perform on Finnish stages in mid-December with four Raskasta Joulua concerts. In those four concerts she will sing together with former Nightwish bandmate Marco Hietala.
They haven’t been onstage together since Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena twelve years ago, now the first duet will be in Hämeenlinna’s Elenia Arena on the December 14th.
The moment is surely historical for many Nightwish fans.
- I have nothing against going onstage with Marco, who has been in Raskasta Joulua from the very start. We will now make beautiful music together and at the same time make many people in the audience cry. I might cry too, Tarja predicts the future.
- I wait with interest what kind of a person will be receiving me after 12 years. I know that much, that it won’t be the same person as when we were in the band, because there have been big changes in his life.

In an interview with IS in October bassist-vocalist Hietala told he will give Tarja a warm hug when they meet each other on tour in December. Tarja, who has lived abroad for most of her adult life, thinks she will top that.
- I’m nowadays so not-Finnish that I get right in there and give kisses to friends too, so Marco will likely get kisses on the cheeks, Tarja says.
Both sang their parts for the duet of Ave Maria found on the album Raskasta Joulua IV separately, so they didn’t meet yet at that point.
- I sang in the Caribbean and Marco apparently in Finland, but onstage we will sing together.
Her family won’t travel with her to all of the Raskasta Joulua shows, but they will come and see mum in some city.
- Namu will see grandpa and her cousin girls at the same time, mum says.

Uusi koti paratiisisaarella

Laulaja Tarja Turunen paljastaa IS:lle, että hän on perheensä kanssa asunut jo pari vuotta Antiguan saarella.

KANSAINVÄLISIIN tähtiimme kuuluva Tarja Turunen on kiertänyt maailmaa kohta parikymmentä vuotta, mutta on maailmankansalaisellakin koti. Reilut kymmenen vuotta se oli aviomiehen synnyinmaassa Argentiinassa, mutta pari vuotta sitten elämää kiihkeästi sykkivä Buenos Aires jäi taakse. Uusi koti löytyi paratiisimaisista maisemista Karibialta.
- Olemme asuneet Antiguan saarella reilut pari vuotta. Halusimme karata pois miljoonakaupungin melskeestä. Antigua on todella rauhallinen saari, Tarja paljastaa elämänsä uudet raamit.
Antigua on hurmannut myös Tarjan aviomiehen Marcelo Cabulin sekä perheen viisivuotiaan tyttären Naomin.
- Antigualla on aivan oma energiansa, joka rauhoittaa, mutta myös inspiroi. Molemmat ovat tärkeitä asioita. Olen viime vuodet mennyt tukka putkella, yhtään ei ole ehtinyt pysähtyä.
Esiintymisten vaatiman jatkuvan matkustelun vastapainoksi Tarja on tarvinnut saarella vietettyä rauhallista kotielämää tasapainottamaan jaksamista.
- Siellä keskitytään vain elämän tärkeimpiin asioihin, joita ovat perhe, koti ja niitä ympäröivä rauha. Muuta ei tarvita, laulaja sanoo.
- On ihanaa, kun on paikka, jossa pystyy aidosti pysähtymään ja antamaan aikaa omille ajatuksilleen. Antigua tarjoaa menemiseeni täyspysähdyksen, sillä siellä ei ole yhtäkään ostoskeskusta, johon voisi lähteä viettämään aikaa.

ANTIGUAN inspiroimaa luovuuttaan Tarja on käyttänyt osallistumalla yhä enemmän uuden musiikkinsa tuotantoon sekä myös kirjoittamalla itse kappaleita. Ensi viikolla ilmestyy joulualbumi From Spirits & Ghosts: Score for Dark Christmas.
- Albumia nauhoitettaessa katselin turkoosin sinistä merta. Ei ehkä ensimmäisenä tulisi mieleen nauhoittaa joululauluja Karibian kesässä, mutta aikataulujen takia nyt piti toimia niin.
Albumille säveltämänsä Together-kappaleen Tarja teki nimenomaan niille, jotka ovat jouluna yksin.
- Joulu tulee kyllä kaikille halusi tai ei, mutta kaikille joulu ei ole ilon juhla. Myös jouluna on paljon yksinäisyyttä ja kärsimystä. Albumi on joululevyksi tummasävyinen, ja mukana olevista tutuistakin joululauluista on muokattu tavanomaisesta poikkeavat versiot.
Joulu on saanut Tarjan omassakin elämässä uuden merkityksen tyttären syntymän jälkeen.
- Menetin oman äitini 2003, ja sen jälkeen joulu karkasi kokonaan pois elämästäni. Joulu ei tuntunut enää pätkääkään joululta, sitä ei enää oikein välittänyt juhlia. Vasta nyt olen alkanut elää joulua uudestaan oman tytön kautta.

TARJAN viimeinen esiintyminen Raskasta Joulua -kiertueella on viikkoa ennen jouluaattoa, mutta sen jälkeen hän käy vielä esiintymässä Ukrainassa.
- Viimeinen keikka ennen joulua on 21. päivä. Sen jälkeen meille tulee poikkeuksellinen joulu, sillä vietämme sen New Yorkissa. Haluan Naomin näkevän kaikki ne jouluvalot.
Kansainvälisestä elämäntavasta huolimatta Tarja haluaa opettaa tyttärelleen myös suomalaisia perinteitä.
- Naomi rakastaa touhuta, kun paistamme jouluksi piparit ja tortut. Hän on hyvin reipas ja tykkää tehdä omilla käsillään. Myös joulusaunaan pyrimme pääsemään, mutta joka joulu se ei onnistu. Naomi uskoo vielä joulupukkiin, äiti paljastaa.

PERHEEN elämänmuutokset jatkuvat ensi vuonna.
- Palaamme silloin Eurooppaan, sillä tarkoituksena on rakentaa talo Espanjaan.
Espanjassa asumista on kokeiltu kuluneen vuoden aikana vuokratalossa, joka sijaitsee lähellä Malagaa. Oma talo tulee samoille kulmille Etelä-Espanjaan.
- Emme halua täälläkään mihinkään isoon kaupunkiin. Työmatkani helpottuvat, koska Malagasta pääsee lentämään sujuvasti joka suuntaan. Olemme nyt totutelleet espanjalaiseen elämäntapaan ja byrokratiaan, Espanjasta puhelimeen tavoitettu Tarja nauraa.
Espanjaan perustettavan kodin ohessa Karibian-talo tullaan pitämään toisena kotina.
- Siitä emme aio luopua, talosta on tullut meille niin tärkeä paikka.

TARJALLA pyörähti elokuussa käyntiin neljäs vuosikymmen. Nelikymppisiä juhlittiin Espanjassa talossa, jonka pariskunta vuokrasi ympäri maailmaa saapuneiden sukulaistensa ja ystäviensä käyttöön.
- En ole koskaan häiden jälkeen juhlinut mitään isosti, mutta nyt juhlittiinkin sitten oikein kunnolla. Häät olivat edelliset isot pirskeet, jotka olemme yhdessäolomme aikana. järjestäneet, vuonna 2003 avioitunut laulaja kertoo.
Juhlat itsessään olivat paras mahdollinen syntymäpäivälahja. Monia vieraista Tarja näki ensimmäistä kertaa vuosikausiin.
- Paljon rakkautta, naurua ja itkua riitti monen päivän ajalle. Tai oikeastaan koko viikoksi, koska osa läheisistä oli täällä koko viikon. Kaikkien aikojen syntymäpäivät, joista olen hyvin kiitollinen, että tuollaiseen ihanaan yhdessäoloon oli mahdollisuus.

IÄN karttuminen on kasvattanut Tarjan halua pitää huolta itsestään entistä enemmän, vaikka laulajan työn takia elämäntavat ovat olleet säntilliset jo aiemminkin.
- Olen oikein tietoisesti ajatellut, että nelikymppiset pyörähtivät käyntiin, mutta hitto vie, takamus ei silti pääse leviämään. Olen kuntoillut enemmän kuin koskaan. Olen varmasti tällä hetkellä paremmassa fyysisessä kunnossa kuin olen ollut elämässäni ikinä.
Tarja liikkuu paljon yhdessä managerimiehensä kanssa.
- Marcelolla pyörähtää kohta täyteen viisikymppiä, mutta mies on paremmassa kunnossa kuin ikinä ennen.
Antigualla on helppo viettää ulkoilmaelämää.
- Juoksemme ja liikumme luonnossa koko ajan. Päivisin on tosi kuuma, silloin tuskastelen kuumuutta eikä silloin juokse hullukaan, mutta aikaisin aamulla tai illan hämärtyessä on hyvä liikkua ulkona. Kaunotar pyrkii suhtautumaan ikään maltilla.
- Naamassa on totta kai omat ryppynsä, mutta ihanat fanit ovat nyt jo vuosia sanoneet, että hekin haluavat näyttää nelikymppisenä samalta kuin minä.
Vähän ennen syntymäpäiväänsä Tarja kävi nenäleikkauksessa.
- Nenä näyttää ihan entiseltään, ulkoisesti sille ei tehty mitään, mutta sisäisesti remontti oli sitäkin suurempi.
Vuosien varrella useat lääkärit ehtivät suositella nenän sisäruston oikaisua.
- Minulla oli jatkuvasti poskiontelotulehduksia. Sisärusto oli kallistunut vinoon sen verran pahasti, että hengityskin alkoi jo hankaloitua.
Espanjassa tehty leikkaus meni hyvin.
- Nyt hengitys kulkee paljon paremmin.

VIISIVUOTIAS Naomi Cabuli Turunen on perinyt äitinsä musikaalisuuden.
- Hän on minä potenssiin kaksi. Hän tanssii, laulaa ja soittaa. Hän halusi aloittaa pianotunnit neli- vuotiaana, minä aloitin vasta kuusivuotiaana, Tarja nauraa.
- Naomi on myös hyvin taiteellinen, hän piirtää ja maalaa. Sitä en osaa itse yhtään, mutta taito tulee isältäni, joka on erittäin hyvä piirtämään ja hänen puolellaan suvussa on kuvataiteen opettajia.
Nyt koulunkäynnin alettua Naomi ei enää matkusta aina mukana, vaan on enemmän kotona isän kanssa Tarjan pyrähdellessä esiintymismatkoille.
- Namu on tyttö, joka on kiitollinen hyvinkin pienestä. Hän ei vaadi asioita eikä ota niitä itsestään selvänä, äiti arvioi.

TARJA Turunen palaa kotimaisille esiintymislavoille joulukuun puolivälissä neljän Raskasta joulua -konsertin verran. Noissa neljässä konsertissa hän laulaa yhdessä entisen Nightwish-yhtyekumppaninsa Marco Hietalan kanssa.
Samalla lavalla oltiin edellisen kerran Helsingissä Hartwall-areenalla lokakuussa 12 vuotta sitten, nyt yhteinen duetto kuullaan ensimmäisen kerran Hämeenlinnassa Elenia Areenalla 14. joulukuuta. Hetki on varmasti historiallinen monelle Nightwish-fanille.
- Ei minulla ole mitään sitä vastaan, että nousemme samalle lavalle Marcon kanssa, joka on ollut mukana Raskasta Joulua -kuvioissa alusta lähtien. Teemme nyt yhdessä kaunista musiikkia ja samalla varmasti itketämme monia yleisössä. Kenties sitä kyynel tirahtaa itseltäkin, Tarja ennakoi tulevaa.
- Odotan mielenkiinnolla, millainen ihminen minua on vastaanottamassa 12 vuoden jälkeen. Sen tiedän, että varmaankaan kyse ei ole samasta henkilöstä kuin bändiaikoina, sillä hänen elämässään on tapahtunut isoja muutoksia.

IS:n haastattelussa lokakuussa basisti-laulaja Hietala totesi halaavansa Tarjaa lämpimästi, kun he joulukuussa kohtaavat toisensa kiertueella. Lähes koko aikuisikänsä ulkomailla asunut Tarja arvelee pistävänsä vielä paremmaksi.
- Olen nykyään niin epäsuomalainen, että menen päälle kuin yleinen syyttäjä ja pussaan ystävätkin, joten Marcokin saa varmaan poskisuudelmat, Tarja hihkaisee.
Raskasta Joulua IV-albumilta löytyvän dueton Ave Maria kumpikin lauloi tahoillaan, joten siinä vaiheessa ei vielä tavattu.
- Minä lauloin Karibialla ja Marco ilmeisesti Suomessa, mutta lavalla laulamme yhdessä.
Perhe ei matkusta mukana kaikille Tarjan Raskasta Joulua -keikoille, mutta jollain paikkakunnalla he käyvät äitiä katsomassa.
- Samalla Namu näkee ukkia ja serkkutyttöjä, äiti sanoo.
