A huge surprise from Tarja Turunen and Marko Hietala: "Something special for Finnish fans"

The Tuska festival stage will be especially a treat for old Nightwish fans. Tarja Turunen, who sang in the band during its early years, only remembers the suffocating latex outfits from old Tuska gigs.
An artist bursting with enthusiasm will take to the stage of the Tuska festival on Friday. This will be Tarja Turunen's first time as a solo artist at the festival. She is extremely grateful for the opportunity to perform.
– There is always a special charge when you get to perform in front of your home audience, she reflects.
Turunen is giving an interview from her home in Spain, where she has just arrived from a South American tour. The Tuska performance falls in the middle of a new tour, which starts at the end of June and continues into September.
So the busy artist doesn’t really have time for a summer vacation.
– Of course, there are a few breaks here and there, and we have time to see family and friends in Finland.
Turunen's husband Marcelo Cabuli and 12-year-old daughter Naomi are on tour with her. She reveals that the family visits London during their free time in the summer for their daughter.
– Naomi enjoys reading so much that we have to go there so that she can get to the bookstores properly, Turunen laughs.
Turunen has previously said that her daughter, who attends an international school, speaks English as her main language and Spanish as her second language. At home, Turunen also speaks Finnish to her daughter.
– Naomi doesn't often have a phone in her hands, she lives and breathes books.
Turunen first took to the Tuska stage in 1999 as a soloist for Nightwish. At that time, the festival was held at VR's warehouses. Turunen doesn't remember much about the performance 26 years ago, except for one detail:
– I was wearing a ridiculous latex outfit and it was hot as hell.
Now Turunen will not be appearing on stage at Tuska in a latex outfit, she knows that for sure, although otherwise the tour's performance outfits have not been finalized.
– There’s an insane number of clothes. They are made by my good friend Sirja, who still makes performance clothes there in Finland. She has been doing them since the 90s. We have been doing them with her for the previous tours as well.
Turunen last performed at Tuska in the summer of 2004 with Nightwish. Turunen was fired from the band in the fall of 2005 and now 20 years later he is appearing on stage at Tuska as a solo artist.
She relates the audience at Tuska with respect and doesn’t think the audience will be largely different from those she meets for example in Latin America.
–Finland is the Mecca of heavy metal. And a lot of foreign audiences come to Tuska as well to see the concerts.
According to her, festival gigs are special because the audience hasn't come specifically to watch her show.
–It's a celebration for us artists, when it's not your own gig and your own audience, it takes on a completely different charge.
Festivals also offer artists the opportunity to meet colleagues, many of whom have even become friends after years and decades of touring.
One of the friends is closely connected to both Turunen's past in Nightwish and the upcoming gig. The singer reveals that she will also be joined by ex-Nightwish member Marko Hietala at the gig.
– Marko will be at the gig to play a couple of songs. It's pretty special for Finnish fans to see us on the same stage in Finland.
Turunen can’t confirm if the super popular Phantom of the Opera will be played during the show. According to her, at the time of the interview, the setlist has not yet been confirmed.
– I can’t promise whether the Phantom will be played or not, Turunen laughs.

Tarja Turuselta ja Marko Hietalalta jättiyllätys: ”Aika erikoista suomalaisille faneille”

Tuska-festivaalin lavalla hemmotellaan etenkin vanhoja Nightwish-faneja. Yhtyeessä sen alkuaikoina laulanut Tarja Turunen muistaa vanhoista Tuska-keikoista vain tukahduttavat lateksiasut.

Tuska-festivaalin lavalle nousee perjantaina innostuksesta kihisevä artisti. Kyseessä on Tarja Turusen ensimmäinen kerta sooloartistina festivaalin lauteilla. Hän on esiintymismahdollisuudesta ikikiitollinen.
– Kyllä siinä on aina erityinen lataus, kun pääsee kotiyleisön eteen, hän pohtii.
Turunen antaa haastattelun kotoaan Espanjasta, hän on juuri saapunut sinne Etelä-Amerikan kiertueelta. Tuskan esiintyminen osuu keskelle uutta kiertuerumbaa, joka alkaa kesäkuun lopusta ja jatkuu syyskuulle.
Varsinaista kesälomaa kiireinen artisti siis ei voi viettää.
– Toki kyllähän tässäkin on muutamia hengähdystaukoja, ehditään Suomessakin perhettä ja ystäviä nähdä.
Turusen aviomies Marcelo Cabuli ja 12-vuotias tytär Naomi kiertävät kiertueella mukana. Hän paljastaa, että tyttären vuoksi kesän vapaahetkinä perhe piipahtaa Lontoossa.
– Naomi viihtyy niin paljon kirja kädessä, että meidän on pakko käydä siellä, jotta hän pääsee kunnolla kirjakauppoihin, Turunen nauraa.
Turunen on aiemmin kertonut, että kansainvälistä koulua käyvän tyttären pääkielenä on englanti ja kakkoskielenä espanja. Kotona Turunen puhuu tyttärelleen myös suomea.
– Naomin käsistä ei paljoa puhelinta löydy, hän elää ja hengittää kirjoja.
Turunen nousi ensimmäistä kertaa Tuskan lavalle vuonna 1999 Nightwishin solistina. Tuolloin festivaali järjestettiin VR:n makasiineilla. Turunen ei muista 26 vuoden takaisesta esiintymisestä juuri paljoakaan, paitsi yhden yksityiskohdan:
– Mulla oli päällä ihan järjetön lateksiasu ja oli ihan helvetin kuuma.
Nyt Tuskan lavalle Turunen ei nouse lateksiasussa, sen hän jo tietää, vaikka muutoin kiertueen esiintymisasuja ei ole lopullisesti lyöty lukkoon.
– On sitä vaatetta ihan julmetusti. Niitä on tehty mun hyvä ystäväni Sirja, joka tekee siellä Suomessa vieläkin esiintymisvaatteita. On tehnyt jo ihan sieltä 90-luvulta asti. Hänen kanssaan niitä on taas väännetty näille edellisillekin rundeille.
Viimeksi Turunen on esiintynyt Tuskassa kesällä 2004 Nightwishin kanssa. Turunen erotettiin yhtyeestä syksyllä 2005 ja nyt 20 vuotta myöhemmin hän nousee Tuskan lavalle sooloartistina.
Tuskan yleisöön hän suhtautuu kunnioittavasti, eikä usko että yleisö eroaa suuresti heistä, joita hän kohtaa vaikkapa Latinalaisessa Amerikassa.
– Suomihan on hevimetallin Mekka. Ja kyllä Tuskaankin tulee paljon ulkomaalaista yleisöä keikkoja katsomaan.
Festarikeikat ovat erityisiä hänen mukaansa siksi, että yleisö ei ole tullut asiasta tehden katsomaan juuri hänen keikkaansa.
– Se on yhtä juhlaa meille artisteille, kun se ei ole sun ikioma keikka ja sun oma yleisö, niin siihen tulee ihan eri lataus.
Festarit myös tarjoavat artisteille mahdollisuuden tavata kollegoja, joista monista on tullut vuosien ja vuosikymmenten kiertämisen jälkeen jopa ystäviä.
Yksi ystävistä liittyy tiiviisti sekä Turusen menneisyyteen Nightwishissä, että tulevaan keikkaan.
Laulaja paljastaa, että keikalla hänen kanssaan nähdään niin ikään ex-Nightwish-jäsen Marko Hietala.
– Marko tulee keikalle fiittaamaan parin kappaleen verran. Se on aika erikoista suomalaisille faneille nähdä meidät Suomessa samalla lavalla.
Turunen ei vahvista vielä, kuullaanko keikan aikana esimerkiksi supersuosittu Phantom of the Opera. Hänen mukaansa haastatteluhetkellä biisilistan vahvistus on vielä tekemättä.
– Mä en vielä uskalla luvata kuullaanko kummitus vai ei, Turunen nauraa.
